Recreational Pilot Licence
Learn the foundations of safe aircraft handling with a Recreational Pilot Licence at Camden Airport. The RPL is a useful first milestone for recreational flying and a pathway towards further training.
You will develop skills in aircraft preparation, take-off and landing, manoeuvring, radio communication and handling abnormal situations. Training progresses from instructor-led lessons to supervised solo flying when you are ready.
Course Overview
The RPL is your first step to an exhilarating career or life-long passion in the aviation industry. The requirements for an RPL are as follows:
- Be at least 16 years old (at the time of sitting your licence test)
- Have a Class 1, 2, or 5 medical certificate, or a recreational aviation medical (conditions apply)
- Have 25 hours flight time (comprising 20 hours dual and 5 hours solo)
- Pass the RPL(A) Knowledge Exam
- Pass a flight test
RPL holders are allowed to fly up to 25nm from the aerodrome where the flight began, the designated training area, or a direct route between the two, in day VFR private operations in a single engine aircraft. For those looking to further their aviation career, the RPL is also the gateway licence needed before moving onto other flight skills such as long distance Navigation. The RPL is a prerequisite for the Private and Commercial Pilot Licences
Training is offered part-time by arrangement with your instructor. Your schedule depends on instructor and aircraft availability, suitable weather and your progress. We do not currently offer full-time courses. Our instructors can tailor a personalised program that gives you maximum value for money and an enjoyable learning experience balancing both theory and practical elements.

- This subtotal excludes the flight test and other costs listed in the shared cost information. Extra dual training is charged at the current hourly rate. Test aircraft hire is separate from the examiner fee; the flight-test estimate will be confirmed before booking. RPL lesson pre-flight and post-flight briefings are included. Additional tuition outside those lesson briefings may be charged separately.
- Additional training may be needed to reach the required flight test standard. This should only be used as an indicative guide with reference to minimum hour requirements for each level of licence, at the current aircraft hiring rates.
- All amounts are in Australian dollars and include GST. Prices quoted DO NOT include tower and movement fees in hiring rates and are charged once per flight; other airport charges may also apply.
